Room mode, explained
Most collaboration products answer the encryption question once, for the whole product, and then live with the consequences. Encrypt everything and search, retention, export and compliance become impossible; encrypt nothing and the confidential conversation has nowhere to go. Both answers are defensible and both are wrong for at least half of what a company actually does in a day.
How Enclessa uses it
Enclessa has two room modes. End-to-end encrypted rooms cover direct messages and group direct messages, which are encrypted with MLS and unreadable by the server, and any channel an organisation permits to be created that way. Managed rooms are the default for channels, which the server can read so that full-text search, retention rules and organisation export work on them. The mode is displayed in the room, and a room cannot be converted from one to the other.
