Migration · Mattermost

The structure matches. The operating model is the decision.

Migrating from Mattermost to Enclessa is structurally the easiest of these moves — teams, channels and roles line up almost directly — and the substantive decision is not about data but about who runs the software. Enclessa is a hosted service operated by us in the European Union, and it is never distributed to a customer, so leaving Mattermost means giving up an installation you control in exchange for not having to operate, patch or scale one.

Open betaThe platform is being built in the open, so parts of it are not there yet, behaviour changes between releases, and no availability figure is committed while it is in beta. What is still being built.

There is no importer

Enclessa has no automated importer. No tool moves messages, files, members or permissions out of another product and into Enclessa, and none is promised. Migration is a manual exercise: you rebuild the structure, run both systems side by side for a fortnight, and cut over on a date everybody knows. Every guide here is written for that reality rather than around it.

What to audit before anybody moves

Why you are leaving

This is the audit item that decides the rest. If the reason is the operational burden, the migration is straightforward. If it is a specific feature, check it exists here first — Enclessa is a smaller product in several dimensions, deliberately.

Whether self-hosting is a requirement or a habit

Enclessa is not distributed to anybody. Enterprise buys a dedicated deployment of the hosted service in a region you name, operated and updated by us — which is not self-hosting and not air-gapped. If you need to run the binary yourself, this is the wrong product and it is better to know now.

What your plugins do

Mattermost has a plugin architecture. Enclessa does not, and nothing loads third-party code at runtime. Every plugin is rebuilt as a webhook, a slash command or an API integration, or dropped.

Which integrations already speak the Slack payload shape

Mattermost’s incoming webhooks follow the same shape Enclessa accepts, so the tooling posting into your channels is usually the easiest part of the whole migration — often a URL change and a header.

What your compliance export was doing

If you run Mattermost’s compliance exports into a supervision system, note that Enclessa has a full organisation data export but no supervision-format export. That gap needs an answer before the cutover.

How Mattermost maps onto Enclessa

MattermostEnclessaWhat changes
Server or workspaceOrganisationOne organisation at your own subdomain, operated by us rather than by you.
TeamTeamDirect. An Enclessa team holds its own categories, channels and roles.
Channel categoryCategoryEnclessa categories are structural rather than per person, and carry ordering and permissions of their own.
Public and private channelManaged channels, public or private to the teamServer-readable, so search, retention, export, webhooks and bots work.
Direct and group messagesDirect and group direct messagesAlways end-to-end encrypted here. This is the significant upgrade in the move, and it costs server-side search in those rooms.
System, team and channel roles with custom schemesOrganisation, team and channel roles over a permission bitmaskNamed roles with a bitmask, plus allow and deny overwrites on a category or a channel. Most Mattermost schemes translate closely.
Incoming webhooks and slash commandsIncoming webhooks and slash commandsThe same shapes. This is usually a URL change rather than a rewrite.
Boards and PlaybooksTask boards, and nothingBoards map onto Enclessa boards, which are a module. There is no playbook or checklist automation equivalent.
PluginsNothingThere is no plugin architecture and nothing loads third-party code at runtime.

What comes across

  • Your structure, once rebuilt — the closest mapping of the five sources.
  • Incoming webhooks and slash commands, usually with only a URL change.
  • Board-shaped work, rebuilt on Enclessa boards.
  • Files, if somebody uploads them again.

What does not come across

  • Message history. There is no importer, and a Mattermost export is not a format Enclessa reads.
  • Plugins, of any kind.
  • Playbooks and checklist automation.
  • Compliance exports in a supervision format such as CSV or Actiance XML.
  • The ability to run the software yourself. Enclessa is not distributed.
  • Custom branding beyond what the platform offers, and any local modification you made.

Running the migration, step by step

  1. Confirm you actually want to stop operating it

Enclessa is a hosted service and is never distributed. Enterprise buys a dedicated deployment in a region you name, still operated by us. If running it yourself is a requirement, the rest of this guide does not apply, and that is a fair answer.

  2. Map teams, categories and channels straight across

This part is close to mechanical. Create the teams, then the categories, then the channels that are actually in use. The vocabulary is nearly the same, which makes it tempting to rebuild everything — rebuild only what is alive.

  3. Translate the permission schemes

Enclessa resolves permissions from roles at organisation, team and channel level over a bitmask, with allow and deny overwrites on a category or a channel. Most Mattermost schemes translate to something slightly simpler; write the translation down before you apply it.

  4. Repoint the webhooks and commands

Enclessa accepts the same Slack-shaped webhook payload Mattermost does, and custom slash commands work the same way — your endpoint gets a request and answers within three seconds, publicly or privately. Most integrations need a new URL and a header.

  5. Decide what happens to direct messages

Direct messages and group direct messages are end-to-end encrypted here, with no administrator override and no server-side search. That is a stronger confidentiality position than you had and a real change in what compliance tooling can see — make sure whoever owns that policy has agreed to it.

  6. Export the old install for the archive, then cut over

Take the export you need for retention out of Mattermost while it is still running, run both for a fortnight, then make the old install read-only on an announced date and decommission it on your own schedule.

Getting your data out of Mattermost

Mattermost is the friendliest of these five to leave, because you are usually running it yourself. It provides bulk export tooling and a command-line client, and a self-managed installation additionally gives you direct access to the database and the file store. Which of these your version supports is worth checking against your own release notes rather than against a general claim, since the tooling has changed across major versions.

  • Check what your version’s bulk export supports, and whether it covers the channels you care about.
  • The command-line client is the usual route for an administrator on a self-managed install.
  • A self-managed installation also has the database and the file store directly, which is the fallback when the export tooling is not enough.
  • Compliance exports, if you use them, are a separate mechanism from the bulk export.
  • Run a test export early. Nothing it produces loads into Enclessa; this is retention, not migration.

The zero-risk way to test this migration is the Free plan: up to ten people, permanently, with no payment card and nothing to cancel. Run one team on it for a fortnight before you commit anybody else.

What Enclessa will not do for this migration

  • There is no importer. A Mattermost export is an archive, not an input.
  • Enclessa is not distributed and there is no self-hosted licence. Enterprise is a dedicated deployment of the hosted service, operated by us, in a region you name.
  • There is no plugin architecture and nothing loads third-party code at runtime.
  • There is no playbook or incident-automation equivalent.
  • There is no compliance export in a supervision format, and no discovery tooling. There is a full organisation data export.
  • There are no mobile apps. Enclessa runs in the browser and on macOS.

Questions

Migrating from Mattermost: questions

Can I self-host Enclessa the way I self-host Mattermost?

No. Enclessa is a hosted service and is never distributed to a customer. The Enterprise plan provides a dedicated deployment in a region you name, operated and updated by us — which is not self-hosting and not air-gapped.

Do my Mattermost webhooks and slash commands still work?

Usually with only a URL change. Enclessa accepts the same Slack-shaped webhook payload, and custom slash commands work the same way: your endpoint receives a request and answers within three seconds, either into the channel or privately to the caller.

Can I import my Mattermost history?

No. There is no importer. Export what your retention policy needs out of Mattermost for the archive, and start fresh in Enclessa.

What about our Mattermost plugins?

They have no equivalent. Enclessa has no plugin architecture and nothing loads third-party code at runtime, which is a security position rather than a missing feature. Each plugin is rebuilt as a webhook, a slash command or an API integration, or dropped.

What changes about direct messages?

They become end-to-end encrypted, with no administrator override and no server-side search or compliance visibility in those rooms. It is a stronger confidentiality position and a real change to what your compliance tooling can see, so it needs agreeing before the cutover.
