An audit log is an append-only record of who did what, to which object, and when — kept separately from application logs so that it can be relied on as evidence rather than read as debugging output.

What Audit log means
The difference between an audit log and an application log is intent. Application logs exist to diagnose a system and are written, rotated and discarded on operational convenience. An audit log exists to answer a question after the fact, usually a contested one, so it has to be structured, complete for the actions it claims to cover, and difficult to edit.
What belongs in one is administrative action rather than ordinary use: permission changes, role assignments, member additions and removals, configuration changes, exports, deletions and access to sensitive records. Logging every message read produces volume nobody searches; logging every permission change produces the record somebody eventually needs.
In a multi-tenant system the audit log carries an obligation of its own. Each entry must belong to exactly one organisation, or the log becomes a route by which one customer learns about another — the kind of leak that is invisible until somebody looks for it, because audit logs are rarely part of the feature tests.
How Enclessa uses it
Enclessa writes a structured audit log of administrative action into its own partitioned table, scoped to the organisation, and gained an explicit organisation column during the tenant-boundary work of phase 7a. Platform operators write to a separate audit log of their own. Export of the audit log to an external sink is planned work in phase 5 and is not available today.
