LiveKit is an open-source WebRTC media server, licensed under Apache 2.0, that provides selective forwarding, room management, access tokens and recording for real-time audio and video applications.

What LiveKit means

Building a media server is a specialist undertaking with a long tail of problems — congestion control, simulcast layer selection, packet loss recovery, ICE across hostile networks — that has very little to do with the product being built on top of it. Using an established server concentrates that expertise where it belongs.

LiveKit issues signed access tokens carrying grants, so the application decides who may join a room and what they may do there — publish, subscribe, share a screen, moderate — without the media server needing to know anything about the application’s own permission model. Recording is handled by separate egress processes rather than by the forwarding path.

The licence matters for a product that will not ship its own source. Apache 2.0 imposes no obligation on the application built above it, which is not true of every component in this category, and it means the media layer can be inspected by a customer’s own security team without asking anybody’s permission.

How Enclessa uses it

Enclessa runs LiveKit for every call, with grants derived from the same permission bitmask the rest of the platform uses. Recording exists for managed rooms and produces a record in the platform; there is no downloadable recording file, and Enclessa does not claim one. Every runtime dependency Enclessa uses, LiveKit included, is open source under an OSI-approved licence, enforced by a licence gate in continuous integration.
